Liturgical Tea: Christ The King

Our day to host the liturgical tea in honor of Christ the King. We enjoyed planning, preparing and serving. We really enjoy the teas as an opportunity to serve our friends and examine ways to celebrate Christ.

Today, the girls are learning to crochet. It is a little different as they are not using yarn, but their fabric stripped. I didn't have a large crochet needle but the girls were able to practice. They will need more practicing. It's been a while for me, I need a refresher myself.

We served chicken a la king in cressant crowns, using basically this recipe (minus mushrooms and I pureed the veggies for picky eaters). It was a hit. I was given the compliment that we were the best cooks ever.
We also made sugar cookie hearts with crown of thorns. Crown cupcakes with Christ the King images adornments, crackers with Brie topped with jewels: dried cranberries. In honor of thanksgiving we made fruit cornucopia with whipped cream cream, complimented by our hostess's cinnamon tea. We brought purple flowers for tradition in honor of the royalty of Christ.

The girls decided to recite a poem together in honor of hosting the tea, a sweet tandem recitation.

A Christmas Carol
By G. K. Chesterton

The Christ child lay on Mary's lap,
His hair was like a light.
O weary, weary were the world,
But here is all aright.

The Christ child lay on Mary's breast
His hair was like a star.
O stern and cunning are the kings,
But here the true hearts are.

The Christ child lay on Mary's heart,
His hair was like a fire.
O weary, weary is the world,
But here the worlds desire.

The Christ child stood on Mary's knee,
His hair was like a crown,
And all the flowers looked up at Him,
And all the stars looked down.

Ignore the wrinkles as a small detail forgotten until too late.

7 quick takes Friday

My kitchen was busy last night preparing for the girls tea party today. Theme: Christ the King. A fun feast to celebrate in a liturgical tea. We made chicken a la King served in pastry crown, crowned cupcakes, Sacred Heart cookies with the crown of thorns, jeweled crackers with cheese and cranberries, and a fruit cornucopia. (pictures here).
It is a pleasure to participate in our girls' group liturgical teas. I hope that girls enjoy the treats. My girls are enriching the tea with a tandem recitation of Chesterton's poem A Christmas Carol.
Middle son is close to achieving Life rank in scouts, just one small task remains. It is a big deal because it opens the door to Eagle preparation with Eagle project planning and implementation and wrapping up of the last vital merit badges. He's on a faster track than his brother was at this age. Seeing what doors have opened and respect given for his brother's Eagle, it is motivating him. I am thrilled he will have that title to work toward.
College son has an internship for the summer!! woo hoo!! It definitely feels he is on fast tract to independent adulthood. Which I want. But is hard to experience. I'm so proud of him and so very thankful for the opportunity. But sad, too. ( these apron strings are hard to cut).
I'm still mostly on my post election disgust with all-media-news-fast; but, turned on talk radio while waiting for Nick during music lessons just to be sickened with the tax negotiations. Hint: raise revenues but not tax rates, means we will loose something like home mortgage deduction or they'll be big weasels and hide it under AMT and have it effect many more Americans that don't consider themselves "high income". yuck. Not trusting those sneaky weasels.
I am working on an advent chain project for my Sunday school kids to make and take home. I need to get staplers, glue is too messy; it should keep their hands occupied so we can review prayers and commandments. I have a new student and he is ahead of the game by already knowing his prayers. Yay! homeschool moms!
I've been sick with a sinus cold all week. It's dragging on, my girls are trying to help out, especially with Lilly (diaper changes and getting her to sleep so I can try to). This dang cold comes with insomnia mostly because I am not a mouth breather when I sleep, my nose is out of commission, so I can't sleep. Yes, I am the biggest baby in my house!! :)
I'm considering sleeping in the car so I can sit-up right. I'm good during the day, come on sunrise!
I don't usually take OTC meds, so I'm not sure what to take when I give in and try something, apparently I'm not good at guessing. I have found most meds falsely advertise how they will help you through these ailments. Ie, I'm not sleeping peacefully at 4 a.m. ( I've already admitted I'm a baby). But hey, my quick takes are done!

~ Capturing the context of contentment in everyday life ~

I love when I find pictures on my camera that my kids took of each other.
Molly took this of Cc while she was watching her siblings play football.

Max took this of Cc when he was playing with the flash he received for his birthday.
She had to help make this one work, with the added fun of dressing up.

Euly's aunt had all kinds of plans to keep the kids happy Thanksgiving.
They were too busy to get to this, so Euly put it together once she came home.

"Mom, did you add enough milk to the batter?"
My kitchen helper. Lilly loves to help with anything in the kitchen.

This is not the lottery ticket we were hoping for...
Not the winning power ball ticket but did we dream big over the opportunity. I do not normally give into gambling throwing three dollars away, as I have a long history of not winning anything. Ever. In fact,  I'm bad luck for others. On our honeymoon, when my husband would gamble and his luck suddenly turned for the worse, he'd look up and  I was sure to be within feet of him.
But, this was a fun experiment that was worth $3. It was funny to see how we would plan on spending an unbelievable sum. My kids are quite generous with the winnings.
They all agreed we would give the money our parish needs to build our church.
One child said , quite relieved, "then I could go to medical school."
Aww, I didn't realize he had put it out of his dreams.
Another said, "We would buy lots of land, a ranch actually,  for horses chicken and sheep with our own lake."
"Buy our own island in the Bahamas."
I thought it would be very dangerous to be in charge of so much, but, with my luck, I never really worried we'd win. Now to make all their dreams come true without a large sum...

Life for us this Thanksgiving weekend

a review of things I am very blessed by and quite thankful for: a trip to visit family.

I am thankful for beautiful views...

I am thankful for enough siblings and a large place to play football....

I am thankful for a sister to carry Lilly long distances...

and grandmothers to help her find her letters...

and the way Lilly says butterflies: "flufffries"...

I am thankful for the over abundance of food we had to celebrate this harvest of thanksgiving to God...

including Sabrina's cake balls!

I am thankful for family we rarely see...

especially ones so close in age who all love to do the same things.

I am thankful the kids were able to spend time jet skiing, and that they have an aunt that can keep up with the most energetic of them, and keep them on the move all day.

And a fire to sit by and warm their bones into the evening.

7 Friday Quick Takes

1. My kids went lake swimming on Thanksgiving. November in Texas, you never know what to expect!
We had excitement with the oven breaking under the weight of a 28 pound turkey. we had every possible food I love so I just had enough room on my plate for a tablespoon of each. Thankful for leftovers!
2. My daughters eye allergy was at it again yesterday. A bug flew in her eye while jet skiing at 50 mph. It doesn't take much, and never the same thing, to get her eye swelling. Thankfully she has her drops to soothe and a benedryll to get the swelling down.
3. Today marks my twentieth anniversary as a mother. Happy birthday Max!!
4. My sweet mother made chocolate pie for us, after a casual comment (nameless) that it didn't seem like thanksgiving sweets were complete with out it. Boom, three beautiful pies awaited us... for breakfast! Best mom/ grandma/ mother-in- law ever!
5. I'm trying very hard to work on my health and weight. I completely understand no one really likes to hear details about it, but I am happy and proud to know I made it through two of the feast trifectas( Halloween and Thanksgiving) without gaining weight.
6. I am thankful for Marriage this holiday, especially the example set by my parents and in laws. And very thankful for our 25 years! It's not always a dance through the daisy fields, but gives so many people foundational peace. A solid marriage gives peace, comfort, and sense of "home" to so many not even directly related.
7. I found a "deal" at the library sale: vcr videos for 25 cents each. So, I splurged a dollar. Disney songs are the devil. I have a Mulan tune that keeps playing in my head all day long and even wake up at night.(that Honor to us all song).

{pretty, happy, funny, real}

I still wanted to post a phfr, even though tomorrow is Thanksgiving and there isn't a link up, but are prayers are with all.
~ Capturing the context of contentment in everyday life ~
We had a lovely day for our girls/boys groups' Thanksgiving feast and games, more pictures over here.

Passing time at the zoo.
With some of my kids in science classes at the museum, and some with me waiting, the zoo membership has been a delight this year.
A friend, her daughter, Lilly and I walked over and checked out the elephants getting baths, after Lilly's persistent "elepa, elepan."This little guy is exactly Lilly's age- 2 1/2. Lilly was thrilled to spend time watching the process. The zoo keeper would spray a hose, and the elephant would scoot to he farther corner acting like he hated the water, and slyly shuffle back to the keeper to get soaked and scrubbed. What a little actor.

Having kids in the classes allow me and Lilly a chance to spend as much time in the museum as we'd like. We love to visit the new, large dinosaur exhibit. Lilly is quite the actor here. I asked her if she was really scared of the dinosaurs, and she said "no."
Sometimes illnesses come out of the blue and try to spoil the fun. This sweet girl wanted to be out in the sunshine, be around others having fun, allowing her siblings to enjoy the day, while she let the sun help make her feel better. The sun did the trick, and she feels great now.

Have a Blessed Thanksgiving!
Wishing all a Blessed Day for this Thanksgiving. We may not always have the prayers answered the way we imagine, or situations to work out the way we want, but we are still and always under His loving care.
For that, we are truly thankful.
